Here’s wishing you a very special start to the New Year!

I would like to begin by wishing my readers all the very best for 2010. My start to the New Year has been quite special as I have the pleasure of spending it in Curacao. This week I am giving a masterclass for legislative draftsmen and lawyers from the island area of Curacao. 2010 is an important year here as it marks the end of the union of islands in the Netherlands Antilles. Curacao, like Aruba and Sint Maarten, is being given greater autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This is due to come into effect on 10 October 2010 (10/10/10) and will of course have implications for constitutional and administrative relations. The purpose of the five-day masterclass is to consider and assess the effects this new status will have on the existing legislative system. I am pleased to report that, on the whole, the participants of the masterclass are seeing the positive effects the new status will have, which lends energy to the collaborative effort of shaping the future of Curacao!
