This week, I had the pleasure to address a word of welcome to our foreign students. The second semester group is always somewhat smaller in size in comparison with the start of the academic year, mainly involving students who come here to study in the context of an exchange programme. However, with around 150 students from 40 countries, we are seeing an increase over previous years.During the informal part of the programme, I had another fortunate opportunity to talk to a number of the students. This can be very enlightening. One of my questions is always: Why Tilburg University? What enticed you to move from Buenos Aires, Sydney, Montreal, Seoul, Beijing, Ankara or Milan to Tilburg University?
The reactions show a remarkable consistency. The most frequently heard response is: I heard from other students at my university that studying at Tilburg University and living in Tilburg is very worthwhile. Word-of-mouth advertising by like-minded people therefore works well.
The second most common response is that a professor of the student’s own university recommended our university because of its good reputation in the area of……
Useful information, of course, and I find such conversations very motivating.
