Investing in higher education is beneficial for our entire society, and not just for students.
Those with university degrees are the leaders and entrepreneurs of the future, after all. Research shows that the societal yield of one extra year of education is at least as high as the yield for the individual (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 2010, “The high costs of low educational performance”).
This fact casts a different light on the idea that it is both wise and justified to apply the profit principle to higher education. There is risk involved in asking students to invest even more in their education. Enrolment could even decline. We must also be aware of the fact that investment in higher education in the Netherlands has lagged behind the growth of the student population in recent years.
A society that makes an earnest investment in education and students is well within its rights to expect that everything will be done to encourage a healthy yield on its investment. That means that our students will really have to be on their mettle to be all that they can be. Students and lecturers together will have to redouble their efforts to get the most out of the educational experience, so that not only we, but all of society, can benefit from new wisdom and knowledge.

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for writing a different topic hereby. However, I would like to pay your attention to an issue concerning International Business Law Master (IBL) Programme.
I am not sure how many students there are in IBL degree. However, I must say that there are too many students for "effective" thesis supervision. I am now on my computer trying to go on my thesis and if I have any questions to ask (please be sure that I have and I will have many questions), the lines of effective communications are limited with any supervision. In theory we have 2 supervisor who are Prof. Vermeulen and Prof. van der Elst. However, in practice, I can barely reach them due to their busy business and/or academic obligations. There could be at least some other full-time professors to support supervision, but there are also none of them.
Yes, there have been some thesis meetings (up to now 2), but these are in my opinion not sufficient. Thesis is "individual" work so that meetings should also be "individual" not in a group or a class as a whole.
I think Phd students could be more involved in such supervision. Or you can decrease the number of accepted students. So increase the quality rather than the number of your graduates.
At this time of year, I am receiving emails through many channels (LLM GUide, personal emails, etc.) I must say that most are asking to confirm whether professors are experienced at teaching and/or about course quality, and most importantly "feedback and supervision by professors" which includes thesis supervision.
I hope Tilburg University will take necessary precautions so that we are treated as an individual!
I also would love other professors to have such personal blogs so that we can give effective feedback.

Unfortunately I agree with this comment. I also see that there is thesis supervision but without reading what students prepare. And nobody can dare to complain directly (including me)...
